Contemporary writers observed that the Ancient Greeks were among the most moderate of ancient peoples. While wine was important in their religion, for medicinal reasons, and for hospitality, Greek writers stressed rules about moderation. There were many warnings against intoxication. The accepted practice was to dilute wine with water.
A notable exception to this rule of moderation was the cult of Dionysus, in which intoxication was believed to bring people closer to their god.
