Justinian II

Justinian II Rhinometus (cut-nose) reigned first from 685 to 695 beginning at age 16.  In regards to religion, Justinian tried to reconcile the split between Rome and Constantinople, but insisted that Constantinople would be the supreme center of Christianity.

Justinian heavily taxed the provinces.  He was unpopular and overthrown.  His general, Leontius, cut his nose off and slit his tongue. Justinian was then exiled across the Black Sea.

He came back with the help of the Bulgars to rule from 705 to 711.  Justinian entered the city by sneaking through the aquaducts.  He came back wearing a golden strap-on nose and began a reign of terror beginning with the public execution of Leontius.
