Sociological Imagination Video Montage

Sociology Video Montage

Task:
This assignment allows students to use music and images to tell a story while utilizing sociological concepts throughout the montage along with relevant quotes.  This project requires students to analyze photos and music lyrics while utilizing course concepts, statistics, and quotes to enhance their montage project.

The project begins with a social issue or topic of interest and evolves into the creation of a teaching instrument that the student uses to tell a story through video, still image, transition patterns and auditory artifacts from pop culture. The level of creativity that is expressed in this assignment forces both the instructor and the students to see the world differently both through the lens of pop culture and also through the lens of the storyteller - in this case the student. This project puts the student in creative control and the requirements of this project utilize technology and culture to enable students to demonstrate a mastery of introductory sociological material.

Procedure:

1.  Choose a social issue you wish to investigate (e.g. pollution, poverty, inequality, crime, suicide, abortion, alcoholism, capital punishment, animal rights, media violence, child abuse, unemployment, eating disorders, gun control, same-sex marriages, ageism, health care, education)

2.  Select a song that goes with your social issue to deconstruct and outline.  (typed and hand-written, 1-2 pages depending on how long the song is)

3.  Why this issue is important to you personally?  (typed 1-2 paragraphs)

4.  Analyze why how this issue affects society.  (typed 1-2 paragraphs)

5.  Find images on the Internet related to the song you have selected. Be sure to record where you found those images for your citations.

6.  Research your social issue and add facts, quotes, charts, and graphs to the presentation.

7.  Using Animoto, PowerPoint, Moviemaker, Prezi or some such program, create a video montage to the song you have chosen.  See an example of a video montage on war at:
